smartdept.inc is in search of an Associate Creative Director for their client in downtown Chicago. This person will be responsible for leading select design projects but also doing hands-on design work. The ideal candidate will have 6-8 years working in a creative agency.

This role is key to supporting the Design Team Creative Director in the planning, strategy, concepting, and direction for their key design initiatives—with a concentration on packaging, gift packaging and visual identity—to help create world famous brands. The ACD Design role helps to lead the day-to-day ideation, management and execution of projects on behalf of the brands, partnering with the Creative Director to achieve their objectives and meaningful results. Additionally, our in-house agency model will give you a unique perspective and a broad range of experience, specifically an understanding of a boutique agency structure in a client side environment.  Finally, the ACD will join their new Design Team on the ground floor, with tremendous opportunity for individual growth and the chance to make an imprint in our organization on a global scale.

What you'll do:

  • Supports the CD on all projects, ranging from packaging to visual identity to illustration concepts
  • Ability to strategize and concept against creative design briefs—translating brand story to design storytelling that comes to life through high-end design systems in packaging and visual identity
  • Be connected—from cultural influences to competitive to trends, be on the pulse of what’s happening in the world and how that can impact breakthrough design ideas
  • Takes ownership of appropriate projects and recognizes where and how to deliver above and beyond the client ask
  • Ability to prioritize and manage workload while seeing opportunities to bring in further support when needed
  • Demonstrates original thinking and brings ideas forward related to brand challenges, projects and workflow
  • Looks outside of category for out-of-the box lifestyle and trend inspiration that can impact the visual identity of our brands
  • Provide immediate impact on projects, delivering on time and exceeding expectations
  • Exhibit knowledge of new and possible techniques and technologies that can impact experience
  • Earn trust of agency and client partners
  • Volunteers to do more and seeks greater responsibility
  • Taking on the role of an entrepreneur with a mindset in working with the CD
    to build the design team business and grow the team

What you'll need:

  • Combination of a high-end/lifestyle designer and conceptual thinker
  • Able to demonstrate flexibility in approach to challenges
  • Embraces collaboration in building ideas and strong, strategic design solutions
  • Ability to produce interesting and impactful design solutions for flagship brands
  • Ability to concept, build and present powerful presentations of work
  • Seeks to understand the industry, brands, agency process and the background/objective of an assignment if not explicitly given
  • Exhibits poise and professionalism at all times
  • Strong organizational skills and highly detail-oriented
  • Comfortable juggling multiple projects with aggressive timelines
  • Exhibits leadership mindset
  • 6-8 years experience as a Senior Designer with heavy design experience at creative design agencies working on consumer-facing brands
  • Experience with high-end lifestyle brands—spirits industry a plus
  • Knowledgeable of design practices and trends within lifestyle brand development
    and packaging
  • Ability to lead and provide direction on design as well as ability to create hands-on
  • Excellent collaborative, organizational and leadership abilities
  • Ability to work independently and lead a developing team, take initiative, and volunteer innovative ideas and solutions; while also working well with constructive feedback and following direction
  • Proven leader of teams and working cross-functionally
  • Self-starting and ambitious with entrepreneurial streak and ambitious career goals
  • Strong client service aptitude and relationship building mindset
  • Full fluency with Adobe Creative Suite, and Keynote

Note: This position is full-time permanent, so the candidates needs to be on-site in Chicago.
