Prepress Production Artist

smartdept. is searching for a Prepress Production Artist for a packaging and print industry client in Kansas City, MO. The ideal candidate will have 1–3 years of experience in print or packaging design. This is a full-time, onsite position with occasional remote flexibility.
The Prepress Designer will prepare customer graphics for high-speed digital printing. This role is perfect for detail-oriented problem-solvers who thrive in fast-paced print production environments and enjoy both the technical and creative sides of design.

What You'll Do:

• Preflight customer art files to ensure compliance with print standards
• Communicate file issues and recommend changes to ensure print quality
• Organize and set up graphics for digital print production
• Finalize graphics and develop press-ready files
• Create electronic proofs (PDF Print Cards) for customer review
• Prepare files for physical proofs/samples
• Attend press checks to ensure color accuracy and print quality
• Guide files through RIP (Raster Image Processing) software
• Maintain print profiles and ensure correct file processing
• Use color management tools to check printed color accuracy

Education/Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Visual Communication Design, Graphic Technologies, or other print production training program
• 1–3 years of experience in print or packaging design
• Proficiency in Adobe CC (Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat)
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and Adobe InDesign
• Strong attention to detail and organization
• Ability to prioritize, adapt quickly, and solve creative problems
• Willingness to learn and grow in print production

Nice-to-Have Skills:

• Experience with ColorGate ProductionServer 10+ (RIP software)
• Familiarity with high-speed digital/inkjet print production
• Knowledge of Esko, WebCenter, and Encore (project management software)
• Color management and Pantone color expertise
